Before hardwood, laminate, or luxury vinyl plank goes into your Pennsylvania home, the subfloor needs careful attention.

Subfloor preparation is not the glamorous part of a renovation, but it is where long-term durability begins. A properly prepared base gives your finished floor the stable, smooth foundation it needs to look refined and feel solid underfoot for years.

Start by Identifying the Existing Subfloor

Most homes have either a wood subfloor, typically plywood or oriented strand board (OSB), or a concrete slab. The preparation process depends on which one you have, the flooring material you selected, and the conditions in the room.

Wood subfloors are common in upper-level rooms and many homes with basements or crawl spaces. They can develop squeaks, loosened fasteners, water damage, or uneven seams over time. Concrete is common on slab foundations and in lower-level spaces. While it may look solid, concrete can hold moisture and may have dips, cracks, or high areas that need correction.

The finished flooring also affects the standard of preparation. Hardwood often requires a particularly dry, stable wood subfloor. Luxury vinyl plank needs a very smooth, flat surface because imperfections can eventually show through. Laminate flooring can tolerate minor texture when installed with the correct underlayment, but it still needs a firm, even base.

Clear the Room and Protect the Work Area

Existing flooring must be removed when it is damaged, too thick for a new installation, unsuitable for the new product, or hiding a compromised subfloor. In some cases, certain flooring can remain in place beneath a floating floor, but that decision should be based on the manufacturer’s requirements and the condition of the existing surface, not convenience alone.

During removal, baseboards, shoe molding, and transitions may need to come up. This allows the new floor to sit correctly and gives the finished room a cleaner, more intentional appearance. It also helps avoid narrow perimeter cuts that can make an otherwise beautiful installation look unfinished.

Inspect for Damage Before Covering Anything

Soft, swollen, or rotted wood should be replaced, not patched over. If the damage came from a plumbing leak, overflowing appliance, roof issue, or damp crawl space, resolve the source first. Installing premium flooring over an active moisture problem can put the entire investment at risk.

Concrete deserves the same level of scrutiny. Small hairline cracks may be manageable depending on the flooring system, while wider cracks, crumbling spots, or movement-related damage can require additional repair. Surface contaminants such as paint, oil, adhesive residue, or curing compounds may also interfere with adhesives and leveling materials.

Check Flatness, Not Just Whether the Floor Looks Level

Homeowners often use the word “level” when they mean “flat.” They are related, but they are not the same. A floor can slope slightly across a room and still be suitable for many flooring installations if it is consistently flat. What causes trouble is a series of humps, dips, ridges, and uneven seams.

A flooring professional checks the surface with a long straightedge or laser and compares the results to the flooring manufacturer’s tolerance. The exact requirement varies by product, so there is no one measurement that applies to every installation.

High spots can be sanded, ground down, or otherwise corrected. Low areas may need a patching compound or self-leveling material approved for the subfloor and flooring system. This step takes patience, but it directly affects the finished result. A flat subfloor helps planks lock together correctly, reduces movement, and prevents visible irregularities in the floor above.

For luxury vinyl plank, surface smoothness is especially important. Vinyl is durable, comfortable, and design-forward, but it does not conceal every flaw beneath it. With hardwood, an uneven base can lead to movement, stress on fasteners, and an inconsistent finished appearance. Proper correction protects the material and supports warranty requirements.

Test Moisture Before Installing New Flooring

Moisture is one of the most common causes of flooring failure, particularly in basements, bathrooms, kitchens, entryways, and homes with concrete slabs. It can cause wood to expand or cup, laminate edges to swell, adhesives to fail, and vinyl flooring to release or telegraph issues from below.

Concrete may appear dry while still releasing moisture vapor. Professional moisture testing provides a more reliable picture than a visual inspection alone. The type of test and acceptable result depend on the flooring product and installation method.

Wood subfloors should also be checked for moisture content, especially before hardwood installation. The goal is not simply to find a dry number. Flooring and subfloor conditions should be compatible with the home’s normal indoor environment so the materials can adjust without excessive expansion or contraction.

If moisture levels are too high, the right response depends on the cause. It may involve improving drainage, addressing a vapor issue in a crawl space, allowing concrete more time to cure, using an approved moisture-mitigation system, or selecting a flooring product better suited to the space. Skipping this step can turn a planned upgrade into an expensive repair.

Plan for Underlayment, Transitions, and Finished Height

The subfloor is not always the final layer beneath your new flooring. Many installations require an underlayment, moisture barrier, sound-control layer, or adhesive system. Each serves a specific purpose, and using the wrong product can affect performance.

For example, laminate and some floating luxury vinyl floors may use a manufacturer-approved pad for cushioning and sound reduction. Flooring installed over concrete may need a vapor barrier. Glue-down materials require compatible adhesives and a properly prepared surface. Hardwood may call for a moisture-control layer or an installation method suited to the structure below.

Also consider how the new floor will meet adjoining rooms. A thicker floor can affect door clearance, appliance openings, stair nosing, and transitions between rooms. Planning these details before installation avoids last-minute trimming, awkward height changes, or transitions that interrupt the flow of the home.

Let Materials Acclimate to the Home

Not every product has the same acclimation requirements, but indoor conditions matter for all flooring. The home should be enclosed, climate-controlled, and maintained at normal living temperatures and humidity before and during installation. This is particularly important for hardwood and other materials that respond to environmental changes.

Do not rely on a garage, porch, or unfinished basement as a staging area for flooring materials. Bringing products into the installation environment as directed by the manufacturer helps reduce unnecessary movement after installation.
